I began exploring alternative photographic processes as a way to reconnect with the handmade aspect of printing photographs. I have found a new world of possibilities in the variations possible in cyanotype, both predictable and unpredictable.

Cyanotype was first developed in 1842 but didn’t have widespread use until fifty or so years later. It is most familiar term known to us is the blueprint.

At first cyanotype seems simple, no darkroom needed, a simple mixture of chemicals, and exposure to sunlight. But in going deeper into the process there are many variations and combinations available to change the tone of the print from the native blue.

My explorations in the medium strive for a balance of an 19th century process with 21st century images. Making the new old, and the old new.
